NLL Week Thirteen: Riggers first playoff qualifier

Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Thirteen, 27-29 March 2009. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.)


Toronto Rock at Calgary Roughnecks
Friday, 9:00 PM - Saddledome

Lewis Ratcliff scored five goals in the Rock's 12-10 victory over the Roughnecks.

Among Ratcliff's tallies were the first two goals of the game and a late strike that gave Toronto (5-7) a 12-9 lead with just over four minutes to play.

Kaleb Toth scored five goals for Calgary (8-3), which remains in first place in the Western Division.



Portland LumberJax at San Jose Stealth
Saturday, 3:30 PM - HP Pavilion

The LumberJax scored seven straight second-half goals to rally past the Stealth, 14-12.

The game-changing run by Portland (6-4), spanning the final seconds of the third quarter and most of the fourth, came immediately after an 8-0 run by San Jose (4-8) put the Stealth ahead, 11-7.

Portland's Brodie Merrill (3 goals, 6 assists) led all scorers with nine points. Rhys Duch (5 goals, 3 assists) and Colin Doyle (1 goal, 7 assists) each had eight points for the Stealth.

The teams meet again Sunday afternoon at Rose Garden.



New York Titans at Buffalo Bandits
Saturday, 7:30 PM - HSBC Arena

Brendan Mundorf's goal with just under ten minutes to play broke an 8-8 tie and helped push the Titans to an 11-9 win over the Bandits.

Buffalo (8-4) had just scored four of the previous five goals (two by Mark Steenhuis, who led the Bandits with four goals total) to force the fourth-quarter deadlock.

Mundorf and Casey Powell each had hat tricks for New York (7-5).



Colorado Mammoth at Philadelphia Wings
Saturday, 7:30 PM - Wachovia Center

Athan Iannucci scored four goals, leading the Wings to a 17-13 victory over the Mammoth.

Philadelphia (5-7) scored four goals over two minutes in the fourth quarter, turning an 11-10 nailbiter into a five-goal lead.

Aside from Iannucci, Merrick Thomson also had a hat trick for the Wings. Gavin Prout scored three goals for Colorado (6-6).



Boston Blazers at Rochester Knighthawks
Saturday, 7:35 PM - Blue Cross Arena

A late three-goal run gave the Knighthawks an 11-10 victory over the Blazers.

Trailing 9-8 with under four minutes to play, Rochester (5-6) moved ahead by two after goals by Shawn Evans, Jamie Rooney and Chris Schiller in quick succession.

Evans finished as one of four Knighthawks to score two goals. Daryl Veltman, meanwhile, scored three times for Boston (7-5).



Calgary Roughnecks at Minnesota Swarm
Saturday, 8:00 PM - Xcel Energy Center

Six straight second-half goals proved more than enough for the Roughnecks to defeat the Swarm, 13-10.

Trailing 8-6 midway through the third quarter, Calgary (9-3) strung together a half-dozen goals (including two each by Kaleb Toth and Curt Malawsky).

Dane Dobbie (game-high four goals), who did most of his damage early, netted a goal in the final minute to nail down the victory and punch Calgary's ticket to the playoffs.

Kevin Buchanan and Aaron Wilson each scored three goals for Minnesota (5-7).



Toronto Rock at Edmonton Rush
Saturday, 9:30 PM - Rexall Place

Andy Secore scored five goals in the Rush's 16-12 thumping of the Rock.

Up by just one after three quarters, Edmonton (4-8) scored the only three goals of the final period, two of them by Secore.

Luke Wiles finished with three goals for Toronto (5-8).



San Jose Stealth at Portland LumberJax
Sunday, 6:00 PM - Rose Garden

A 7-1 run to end the first half lifted the Stealth to a 13-8 victory and a split of this weekend's home-and-home series.

Portland (6-5) led 2-1 midway through the first quarter before Colin Doyle kicked off the 20-minute domination by San Jose (5-8). Doyle scored twice in the run, as did Tom Johnson, and the Stealth led 8-3 at halftime.

Doyle finished with four goals for the Stealth. Tim Campeau scored three times for the LumberJax.
