NLL Week Four: K'Hawks turn tables on RockRochester blasts Toronto in 4th for 16-8 victory; Bandits get first winR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Four, 29-30 January 2010. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Rochester Knighthawks at Orlando Titans Orlando (2-1) struck first, on a Casey Powell goal a minute and a half into the contest, but the Knighthawks countered a short time later with a goal by Craig Point. That, however, was the end of the offense for Rochester (2-2) for a while, as Hall netted a shorthanded goal a few minutes later and Matt Alrich added a Titans goal late in the first quarter. Four Orlando goals to open the second quarter made for a cozy 7-1 lead, as Matt Vinc came up a late Point goal shy of shutting out the Knighthawks for the entire quarter. However, the score stood 7-2 for the Titans and deficits have spelled doom for the K'Hawks so far this season. Goals by John Grant and Shawn Williams narrowed the gap to three goals, but Orlando hit back with a Hall goal and broke Rochester's spirit with a power play goal at 14:58 of the period. Orlando knocked down three straight goals early in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach for the visitors. Ryan Boyle finished with the game high in points, seven, on two goals and five assists. Grant led the Knighthawks offensively, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists. Philadelphia Wings at Boston Blazers Philadelphia (1-3) was playing catch-up from the first minute on, as Dawson put the Blazers on the board just 49 seconds after the opening faceoff. Ryan Hotaling and Veltman added goals for Boston (2-3), while Kyle Wailes got the only first-period tally for the Wings. A Mat Giles goal early in the second quarter pulled the Wings to within on, but Gary Bining scored less than a minute later for the Blazers. Dawson followed soon after with two goals, and it suddenly was 6-3 in favor of the Blazers. Philadelphia may have thought its luck was changing when Kevin Huntley scored two seconds before halftime and again 22 seconds into the second half, narrowing the score to 7-6, but Dawson halted the run a minute and a half later. Wailes again brought the Wings within one, then Veltman countered with a pair. Bill McGlone scored very early in the fourth quarter, but the score was stuck on 10-8 until Veltman scored his fourth of the game with just 53 seconds left. Giles tacked on a late goal, but there wasn't enough time to make up the remaining two goals. Dawson scored six points (4 goals, 2 assists) to lead all scorers. Giles (3 goals, 2 assists) and Drew Westervelt (1 goal, 4 assists) paced the Wings with five points each. Calgary Roughnecks at Edmonton Rush Edmonton (3-1) jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first quarter, courtesy of goals by Scott Stewart, Brodie Merrill, Hill and Brett Mydske. Back came the Riggers -- Dane Dobbie, Jeff Moleski and Tracey Kelusky, for a 4-4 tie. The second quarter was more of the same back-and-forth play, except that, this time, Calgary (1-3) took a 7-6 lead when Scott Ranger scored twice in quick succession. Andy Secore scored a late power play goal to draw the game all square at intermission. After Secore and Dobbie exchanged goals in their quarter, the Rush moved out in front for good with late-period goals by Hill and Scott Tinning. Calgary pulled to within 12-11 by scoring three times by the middle of the fourth quarter. Hill opened a little breathing room with a power play goal, then Stewart tacked on an insurance goal with 3:46 to play. Calgary's Josh Sanderson tallied a game-high seven points, on two goals and five assists. Ryan Ward had six points for the Rush, scoring a goal and dishing out five assists. Minnesota Swarm at Buffalo Bandits Kevin Dostie and Mark Steenhuis scored to give Buffalo (1-4) an early 2-0 lead, then, after a Callum Crawford goal but the lead in half, Restarits struck twice late in the period, 31 seconds apart. The only "apart" in the second quarter was a fear that the Bandits were falling apart. After a Kyle Clancy shorthander gave the Bandits a 5-2 lead, Minnesota (1-3) ran off three straight goals -- Ryan Benesch, Kevin Ross and Crawford -- to tie the game at 5-all. Buffalo netminder Ken Montour restored order in the third, shutting down the Swarm offense as Buffalo's scoring attack got back in business. Two goals from Mike Accursi, plus singles by Resetarits and Brandon Francis, made for a 9-5 Buffalo lead. Wilson scored 2:26 into the fourth quarter, cutting the gap to three goals, but neither side scored again until a Tom Montour goal some ten minutes later. Steenhuis was at his playmaking best, scoring one goal and helping on seven more, for a game-high eight points. Wilson (2 goals, 2 assists), Crawford (2 goals, 2 assists) and Benesch (1 goal, 3 assists) had four points each for the Swarm. Toronto Rock at Rochester Knighthawks Rochester (3-2) took it to the Rock early and often, with Scott Evans, Shawn Williams and Gary Gait combining for a 3-0 lead less than three and a half minutes into the game. A Blaine Manning goal at mid-quarter was met with three more Knighthawks goals (two by Craig Point). The beating continued in the second quarter. After Garrett Billings and Stephan Leblanc pulled Toronto (3-1) to within 6-4, Evans and Grant found rope again, followed by Shawn Evans and Kevin Fines. 10-4, Knighthawks -- over and out? Not so fast -- the Rock came out of intermission with guns a-blazing and a decidedly improved defense. Toronto scored four goals in the period while allowing the Knighthawks none, rallying to within 10-8. Turnabout, though, remains fair game, and the Knighthawks had the last laugh by not only holding the Rock scoreless in the fourth quarter, but also burying six goals of their own. Payback for last week, when the Rock posted a 4-0 fourth quarter to complete a 17-3 thrashing? Hard to think otherwise, especially after looking at the shots on goal for the period: Rochester 18, Toronto 0. Grant led all players offensively, recording eight points on three goals and five assists. Manning (2 goals, 2 assists) and Leblanc (1 goal, 3 assists) tallied four points apiece for the Rock. Washington Stealth at Colorado Mammoth Colorado (2-3) had the upper hand in a low-scoring first quarter, with Jed Prossner scoring 66 seconds in and Cory Conway netting a goal late in the period. In between, Sedgwick knocked in a goal for the Stealth. Washington (5-0) slid even further behind in the second, 5-2, after the Mammoth netted goals by Jamie Shewchuk, Tom Ethington and Prossner. The lead, though, was short-lived, as Jeff Zywicki keyed a 4-1 run with two goals, tying the game at halftime, 6-6. The jockeying for a lead continued throughout the third quarter, with Washington taking an 8-7 advantage midway through the period on power play goals from Lewis Ratcliff and Zywicki. Alex Gajic tied the score with 32 seconds left, then Rhys Duch untied it with under a second to play. Washington extended its lead to 11-8 three minutes into the fourth quarter on goals by Ratcliff and Luke Wiles. Back came Colorado, though, with Conway scoring soon after and Shewchuk pulling the Mammoth to within 11-10 with 3:46 to play. Sedgwick halted Colorado's bid for a third straight late comeback win, burying a feed from Zywicki for a 12-10 lead with 1:28 to play. The Mammoth wouldn't go down quietly, though, Prossner hitting the back of the net with 10 seconds left and several of his teammates hitting anything that moved. Zywicki led all scorers, tallying nine points on three goals and six assists. Prossner and Conway each had three goals and an assist for Colorado. -30- |
