NLL Week Five: Stealth sneaks past Swarm, 12-9Washington improves to 6-0; Rock wins twice; Titans-Wings postponedR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Five, 5-6 February 2010. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Philadelphia Wings at Toronto Rock Philadelphia (1-4) had a lightning-quick 2-0 lead, as Dan Teat and Kyle Sweeney each scored in the first minute. Back came the Rock, which had the game tied moments later and, thanks in part to two goals by Blaine Manning, had a 6-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Toronto continued pouring it on the second quarter, overcoming an early Mat Giles tally with five goals of its own for an 11-5 halftime lead; two of those goals came from Kim Squire, making a triumphant return to Air Canada Centre after having not played in the league since 2006. Goals by Sweeney and Kyle Wailes early in the third quarter pulled the Wings to within 12-7, but Toronto quickly struck for three straight -- Garrett Billings, Beirnes and Doyle -- and took a 15-7 lead. Just 62 seconds into the fourth quarter, Manning and Beirnes had both scored (17-8 at this point) and whatever chance the Wings had for a miraculous rally was totally lost. Manning and Stephen Leblanc tied for the game high in points, nine, each scoring three goals and dishing out six assists; Beirnes added four goals, while Billings and Doyle netted three each. Teat (2 goals, 3 assists) and Wailes (1 goal, 4 assists) led the Wings with five points each. Orlando Titans at Colorado Mammoth Vinc's big night began by turning aside all ten first-quarter shots by the Mammoth, during which time Orlando (3-1) built up a 4-1 lead on goals by Pat Maddalena, Mike McLellan, Casey Powell and Ryan Boyle. Colorado (2-4) got on the board midway through the second quarter when Ilija Gajic scored shorthanded. Power play goals by Powell and Boyle soon followed, then Colorado's Chris Gill closed out the first half with a goal at 12:09. Vinc pitched another shutout in the third period, as Boyle, McLellan and Powell stretched the Titans' lead to 9-2. The score widened to 12-2 before Colorado netted three late goals, two by Jed Prossner. Boyle (3 goals, 3 assists), Powell (3 goals, 3 assists) and Maddalena (1 goal, 5 assists) had six points each for the Titans. Prossner (2 goals, 1 assist) and Cory Conway (1 goal, 2 assists) paced the Mammoth. Edmonton Rush at Calgary Roughnecks Round Two in the Battle of Alberta began with three Calgary (2-3) goals -- one each from Tracey Kelusky, Sanderson and Scott Ranger -- before Ryan Powell could counter with two late-period goals of his own. Any hopes that Powell's goals turned the momentum in favor of Edmonton (3-2) were soon dashed as Ranger and Sanderson struck by mid-quarter. Kelusky added a man-down goal moments later, then Jeff Shattler and Craig Conn found rope, and a tight 3-2 game had suddenly become a not-so-tight 8-2 runaway at halftime. Shattler knocked home another goal to kick off the third-quarter scoring, but the Rush came back with a pair (one each from Scott Stewart and Dean Hill) to stay within shouting distance at 9-4. Edmonton cranked out four goals in the fourth quarter (not enough, regardless of anything else) but the Riggers ensured a victory by burying four goals of their own -- including two from unlikely sources, defensemen Mike Carnegie and Curtis Manning. Sanderson's six points led all scorers. Gavin Prout paced the Rush, totalling five points on two goals and three assists. Minnesota Swarm at Washington Stealth Washington (6-0) had an early 2-0 lead, courtesy of Jeff Zywicki and Luke Wiles, but the Swarm leveled the score on goals by Aaron Wilson and Callum Crawford. A closing-seconds goal by Cam Sedgwick put the Stealth back in front, 3-2. Crawford scored another two goals in the second quarter, allowing last-place Minnesota (1-4) to stay tight with the NLL's last remaining unbeaten. At halftime, the Stealth's lead remained at just a goal, 6-5. Zywicki created a little breathing room in the opening seconds of the second half, a feat he had to do again moments later after a Ryan Benesch goal for Minnesota. By period's end, Zach Greer and Sean Pollock had scored, and the game was tied at 8-8. The fourth quarter was Rhys Duch's turn to shine, as the youngster scored twice in the first four minutes, part of a three-goal run that put the Stealth comfortably in the lead. Wilson and Peter Morgan swapped goals around the five-minute mark, then the scoring held unchanged the rest of the game. Zywicki finished with eight points, on four goals and four assists. Crawford paced the Swarm offensively, scoring three goals and assisting on two more for a total of five points. Orlando Titans at Philadelphia Wings The storm delivered as expected, dropping 28.5 inches of snow on the city; it was the second-largest snowfall in Philadelphia history. Both teams' flights into Philadelphia (the Titans played at Colorado on Friday night, while the Wings were at Toronto) were cancelled on Friday, leaving the teams unable to arrive in time for the game. No make-up date was announced by the league. Philadelphia (1-4) returns to action next Saturday at home against Buffalo, while the next game for Orlando (3-1) will be on Saturday, 20 February, against Boston. Toronto Rock at Buffalo Bandits Stephen Leblanc got the game's first goal, a 6-on-5 tally four and a half minutes into the game. Buffalo (1-5) stormed back for a 3-1 lead, recording goals by Mark Steenhuis, Frank Resetarits and Billy Dee Smith. Toronto (5-1) then unloaded for seven second-quarter goals, including two by Josh Wasson and two by Manning (one of which came with 20 seconds before intermission). The Bandits, meanwhile, could only scratch out three goals in the period, two by Kyle Clancy, and trailed 8-6 at the break. Manning scored again to start the third quarter, nudging the Rock's lead to 9-6, but Buffalo strung together four consecutive goals (Brett Bucktooth, Roger Vyse, Steenhuis and Mike Accursi) for a 10-9 lead. As quickly as everything came together for Buffalo, though, it all came apart just as spectacularly. Manning scored twice in the first 2:04 of the fourth quarter, then Kim Squire, Leblanc and Brendan Doran netted goals for the Rock. Toronto didn't need any of those later goals, though -- goaltender Steve Dietrich held the Bandits scoreless the entire fourth quarter, leaving Manning's fifth as the game-winner. Manning, who finished with three assists (for a total of eight points), was edged for top scoring honors by teammate Garrett Billings, who netted a goal and dished out eight assists. Clancy paced the Bandits offensively, scoring two goals and adding five assists. Rochester Knighthawks at Boston Blazers Rochester (3-3) scored first, a Craig Point tally on assists from John Grant and Shawn Williams, but Matt Abbott countered seconds later and Daryl Veltman put the Blazers ahead 2-1 late in the first quarter. Dawson scored three times for Boston (3-3) in the second quarter, part of a four-goal run. Gary Gait netted a late power play goal for the Knighthawks, though, and Grant scored seconds later, cutting Boston's lead to 6-3. After an exchange of goals early in the third quarter, Dawson and Veltman knocked in goals, extending the Blazers' lead to 9-4. Grant scored three times in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and Gait added a goal around mid-quarter, slicing the Blazers' lead to 10-8, but Boston replied with the game's final four goals, two by Jamie Rooney. Dawson finished with a game-high eight points (4 goals, 4 assists), while Grant (4 goals, 2 assists) paced the Knighthawks. -30- |
