NLL Week Seven: Blazers beat Titans in double OTMorris goal ends longest game in NLL history; Stealth, Rock lose againR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Seven, 19-21 February 2010. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Calgary Roughnecks at Washington Stealth By the time Paul Rabil scored the first goal for Washington (6-2), the Riggers had struck eight times, the first three coming as a natural hat trick by Kaleb Toth. The Stealth bounced back from a 10-1 halftime deficit to score four goals in the third quarter and four more in the fourth, but by then, Calgary (4-3) had enough goals to coast to victory. Toth led all scorers, tallying seven points on four goals and three assists. Jeff Zywicki (4 goals, 1 assist) paced the Stealth, which has now lost two straight after opening the season 6-0. Rochester Knighthawks at Philadelphia Wings Philadelphia (1-6) jumped out to leads of 3-0 in the first quarter and 5-2 midway through the second quarter, eventually settling on a 5-4 advantage at halftime. The second half was not nearly so kind, as Rochester (5-3) took a 6-5 lead on goals by Shawn Williams and Gait. A John Christmas goal a few minutes later tied the game at 6-6 but Pat O'Toole held the Wings scoreless the rest of the way (22:59, to be precise) and the Knighthawks' offense popped in another six goals. Gait's four goals set the tone after halftime, but it was Williams (2 goals, 4 assists), Shawn Evans (1 goal, 5 assists) and John Grant (1 goal, 5 assists) who led the K'Hawks in scoring. Dan Teat had four points (2 goals, 2 assists) for the Wings. Boston Blazers at Orlando Titans Boston (4-4) opened an early 4-1 lead, led by two Brendan Thenhaus goals, and held a 6-3 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Titans pulled within 6-5 by halftime. New York (3-2) snuck out in front, 7-6, in the third quarter on goals by Chad Thompson and Ryan Boyle, but a late Daryl Veltman tally tied the score again. The Titans held an 11-9 lead with thirty seconds to go in regulation, but goals by Brett Queener and Jamie Rooney (with one second left) forced overtime. Neither side scored in the first overtime, the first time that has happened since the NLL switched from five- to fifteen-minute sudden death periods. The previous record-holder for game length was a 17-16 San Jose win at Calgary in 2007 (71:42). Morris' game-winning goal came on the opening shot of the sixth period. New York's Jordan Hall had a game-high eight points, on three goals and five assists. Rooney and Dawson each tallied a goal and five assists for the Blazers. Colorado Mammoth at Minnesota Swarm Colorado (2-5) scored the game's first three goals and seemed well on its way to escaping last place in the West. However, a 6-1 Swarm run over the remainder of the first half put Minnesota (3-4) ahead at intermission, 6-4. Matters went from bad to worse for the Mammoth after the break. A Jamie Shewchuk goal 64 seconds into the second half did pull the Tusks to within one, but it was the final Colorado goal of the evening. Meanwhile, the Swarm stung Colorado for three goals in the third quarter and six more in the fourth. Crawford (4 goals, 5 assists) and Ryan Benesch (3 goals, 6 assists) each hit nine points for the Swarm. Nenad Gajic led the Mammoth with three assists. Toronto Rock at Edmonton Rush After the teams played to an 8-8 tie in the first half, Gavin Prout put the Rush ahead early in the third quarter. Toronto (6-3) came rolling back, though, as Blaine Manning and Garrett Billings scored late in the period for a 10-9 lead. Edmonton (4-3) put the game away with a four-goal run to begin the fourth quarter, as Brodie Merrill tied the game 31 seconds in, Ryan Ward put the Rush ahead and Powell added two insurance goals. Powell's contribution to the Rush run was noted much later, as the Rock twice scored six-on-five goals to pull within a goal in the final minutes. However, Matt Disher held resolute in goal over the final 2:17, preventing the Rock from tying the game. Powell finished with eight points (4 goals, 4 assists), tying him with Billings (3 goals, 5 assists) for game-high honors. -30- |
