NLL Week Eight: Titans take over East leadOrlando wins at Toronto, 16-12; Washington loses againR.A. Philly Outsider's Guide Editor in Chief Around the National Lacrosse League for the games of Week Eight, 27 February 2010. (Summaries are based on best-available information and may be amended as necessary.) Orlando Titans at Toronto Rock Toronto (6-4) scored the only first-quarter goals (Kasey Beirnes and Garrett Billings) but manged to slip into a three-goal deficit by halftime after the Titans, led by Powell, scored eight times in the second and led 8-5 at intermission. The Rock closed to within 8-7 early in the second half, but Orlando (4-2) managed to stay a step ahead and took a 10-8 lead to the fourth quarter. Orlando blasted the game wide open by scoring four times in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter -- Powell, Chad Thompson, Ryan Boyle and Mat MacLeod. Toronto never again got closer than three goals. Powell finished with a game-high eight points (4 goals, 4 assists). Colin Doyle (2 goals, 3 assists) tallied five points for Toronto. Washington Stealth at Boston Blazers Neither team had much success establishing a lead, as the teams traded goals deep into the fourth quarter. Washington (6-3) led only twice, a 3-2 advantage in the second quarter and a 7-6 edge in the third. Boston (5-4) took five one-goal leads over the first three quarters, then did it three more times in the final period, going ahead for good on a Dawson goal at 9:31. Dawson's third goal of the game came a few minutes later, an insurance tally that produced the game's only multiple-goal lead. Teammate Brendan Thenhaus edged Dawson for the honor of game's top scorer, recording seven points on three goals and four assists ("Dangerous Dan" had 3 goals and 3 assists). Lewis Ratcliff (2 goals, 1 assist) was one of six Stealth players to put up three points in defeat. Philadelphia Wings at Buffalo Bandits Philadelphia (2-6) took a 4-1 lead late in the first quarter, including goals by Westervelt and newly-resigned David Mitchell, and hung on for a 7-6 halftime advantage. The small rally that Buffalo (2-6) had going was snuffed out in the third quarter by five Philadelphia goals (compared to just two by the Bandits). While Buffalo did pull to within 12-10 early in the fourth quarter, it couldn't get any closer. Kyle Wailes led the Wings offensively, recording a goal and six assists. John Tavares (4 goals, 1 assist) was among three Bandits to finish with five points. Edmonton Rush at Rochester Knighthawks For much of the first half, it looked as if Rochester (5-4) was firmly in control, streaking out to a 6-2 halftime lead. Edmonton (5-3) knocked a couple goals off the Knighthawks' lead in the third quarter, as Secore and Jimmy Quinlan keyed a six-goal period with two goals each. A Shawn Evans goal two minutes into the fourth quarter put the Knighthawks ahead 11-8, but the Rush rattled off the final three goals of regulation -- Dane Stevens, Brodie Merrill and Ryan Ward -- to force overtime. Ward and Gavin Prout each had a goal and three assists for Edmonton, while Evans paced the Knighthawks on two goals and two assists. Minnesota Swarm at Colorado Mammoth Minnesota (4-4) led by one goal after fifteen minutes, 3-2, and extended its lead to 8-5 by halftime as Aaron Wilson netted three goals. Colorado (2-6) fired back with five goals in the third period, two by Ilija Gajic, and took a 10-9 lead to the fourth. Campeau tied the game at 11-11 midway through the fourth quarter, a score which held until Alex Gajic scored with 3:07 left in regulation. Ryan Benesch soon tied the score and Campeau delivered the game-winner with 32 seconds to play. Wilson (3 goals, 4 assists) and Callum Crawford (1 goal, 6 assists) each had seven points for Minnesota. Brian Langtry (3 goals, 3 assists) led Colorado with six points. -30- |
