Rock claims Florida Lacrosse Cup Bandits take down Wings, 15-11; Swarm wins in West debut The twenty-third season of professional indoor lacrosse began Saturday with two Eastern Division showdowns, one to spread the gospel of the NLL and one which reprised the league's most-played rivalry. At the BankAtlantic Center (home of the NHL's Florida Panthers), the Toronto Rock held off "host" New York, 15-14, despite a ten-point night (6 goals, 4 assists) by newly-signed Titans forward Casey Powell. To the north, the Buffalo Bandits raised their 2008 Champion's Cup banner and then took apart the visiting Philadelphia Wings, 15-11; Mark Steenhuis led the Bandits with four goals and four assists. In other Week One action, Minnesota won its first game as a member of the Western Division, rallying from down 5-2 to defeat the Portland LumberJax, 11-7.
Knighthawks name Paul Gait new coach NLL Hall of Famer takes over with opener 2 weeks away Two days after accepting the resignation of head coach Paul Suggate, Rochester Knighthawks general manager Regy Thorpe turned Friday to NLL Hall of Famer and former teammate Paul Gait to take over behind the bench. Gait, Thorpe said, "is a very well respected lacrosse icon that guys will have immediate respect for and rapport with." Gait's lacrosse résumé is as impressive as is it long, with three MILL/NLL championships (including the 1997 North American Cup with Rochester) and nine titles in other lacrosse leagues, eleven MILL/NLL All-Pro selections, and 410 career goals (third-most in league history). The one thing Gait is lacking? Professional coaching experience. (He'll get that fast)
No four-leaf clovers: Shamrox shut down Topping the Vancouver Ravens' departure (December 2004) for sudden, last-minute shutdowns, the Chicago Shamrox have suspended operations for the upcoming 2009 season, just two weeks before the team's scheduled season opener against Rochester. The Shamrox cited the weak economy for closing up, although it appears that the strain of operating the team from afar had caught up to team ownership. In a dispersal draft hastily conducted Friday, the Boston Blazers scooped up goaltender Anthony Cosmo with the first pick, while Edmonton grabbed defenseman Scott Self and Toronto snagged Bill McGlone with the next two picks. The NLL has released a revised 2009 schedule, with play beginning on Saturday, 3 January.
NLL to use instant replay on goals, crease violations The National Lacrosse League announced Tuesday that it will use video replay on goals and crease violations for the upcoming 2009 season. The NLL's instant replay system closely mirrors that of the NFL, with head coaches able to challenge two calls per game by throwing a yellow flag onto the playing surface. If a call is upheld, the challenging team loses a timeout. In addition, video review can only be initiated by game officials in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime. "Our game moves very fast, and we wanted to give our game officials every available resource in determining calls in these situations," commissioner Jim Jennings said.
Titans to play five games at The Rock The New York Titans announced this week that they will play five home games at the Prudential Center. Also home to the NHL's New Jersey Devils, the Prudential Center is a 17,625-seat arena in downtown Newark, New Jersey, and opened just one year ago. The Titans will play their other two games in the New York City area at Madison Square Garden, which has been a home arena for the team since its inaugural season two years ago. In addition, the Titans will play a previously-announced "home" game in Florida this January.
NLL headed to Florida (for a night) The New York Titans and Toronto Rock will meet on Saturday, 3 January, in the first-ever professional lacrosse game in Florida, the National Lacrosse League announced Friday. Organized by former NLL star Kevin Finneran, part of a group looking to bring an expansion franchise to south Florida, the game will be played at Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, home of the NHL's Florida Panthers. "We definitely view South Florida as a place for future expansion," commissioner Jim Jennings said, "and we are bringing the game here ... to give fans a chance to experience the excitement of the NLL in person." The game is the regular-season opener for both clubs and is officially a Titans home game.
