After three seasons in New York, becomes NLL's first Florida team

The New York Titans announced Tuesday that they will henceforth be the Sunshine State's giants of lacrosse, not the Big Apple's.

After three seasons in New York, having drifted among three home arenas, the team has relocated to Amway Arena in Orlando, Fla., for the 2010 season.

The club, the first in league history to call Florida home, will be known as the Orlando Titans and will retain its familiar blue-and-orange color scheme.

Steve Donner, former owner of the Rochester Knighthawks, has been installed as team president.

"We are both pleased and excited to bring the NLL to Orlando and the Central Florida sports scene," Donner said. "Although the game has its roots in Canada and the northeast, lacrosse is experiencing tremendous growth in Florida with the emergence of club and high school teams throughout the state."

Of course, lacrosse was on solid footing in New York before the NLL returned to the area, but that never translated to success at the ticket window for the Titans.

After splitting its first season between Nassau Coliseum (Uniondale, NY) and Madison Square Garden and playing its second season at the Garden, the Titans played primarily at the new Prudential Center in Newark this past season.

In five games at "The Rock" and two at MSG in 2009, the Titans averaged a mere 4,544 spectators.

On top of the spotty attendance, expenses made operating the franchise in the New York area unsustainable.

Such concerns won't be nearly so problematic in the City Beautiful, where the Titans reportedly will pay just $15,000 per game for use of Amway Arena.

Additionally, the Titans will move into the brand-new Amway Center upon its completion, tentatively set for fall 2010. By then, the Titans -- who represented the Eastern Division in this year's NLL Championship Game, losing 12-10 at Calgary -- might just have a banner to hang.

"What really excites me is we're bringing a championship-level team to Orlando," Donner said. "We have a young corps of players that's going to be successful from Day One."

"When a fan buys a ticket to a Titans game, they can come down and expect us to play physical and win. Anytime you're doing that in sports, you've got a chance to succeed."

The Titans have already begun selling season tickets, with prices ranging from $99 to $250 for an eight-game plan; contact the team at 407.601.6516 or visit orlandotitans.com for further information.
