Mike Poulin of the Calgary Roughnecks was voted Overall Player of the Week and Angus Goodleaf of the Buffalo Bandits was selected as Defensive Player of the Week for making big saves while their team rallied to win games this past weekend. With his club hosting the Eastern Division-leading Toronto Rock on Sunday and trailing 5-1 in the second quarter, Poulin entered the game in place of starter Matt King. Poulin stopped 28 of the 31 shots he faced, holding the Rock to three goals in the game's final 42 minutes of play. The Roughnecks rallied to defeat Toronto, 10-8. Goodleaf, meanwhile, was called upon to replace starter Mike Thompson with the Bandits trailing the Philadelphia Wings, 5-0, in the first quarter Saturday night. The rookie netminder stopped 37 of the 43 shots he faced, allowing only six goals over the game's final 53 minutes, as the visiting Bandits came from behind to win, 13-11. Buffalo forward John Tavares was named Offensive Player of the Week. After missing the first six games of the season due to injury, Tavares scored two goals and four assists in the win at Philadelphia. The Transition Player of the Week was Jay Thorimbert of the Minnesota Swarm. Thorimbert had three goals on only four shots while picking up 13 loose balls, helping the Swarm to a 16-12 win over the previously-undefeated Washington Stealth. Toronto Rock forward Stephen Leblanc was voted Rookie of the Week, the second consecutive week that Leblanc has won the award. In two games this past weekend, Leblanc tallied eleven points on five goals and six assists. Leblanc scored four goals and had three assists in a 16-7 victory over Edmonton on Friday. On Sunday, the rookie tallied a goal and three assists in a 10-8 loss at Calgary. The NLL weekly player awards are determined each week by a vote of the general managers and head coaches of the league's eleven member clubs. -30- |
